Post 5 Sikhism
Sikhism originated in India and is considered relatively new compared the other major world religions. It was founded buy Guru Nanak who was apposed to the cast system that was present in India as well as in the Hindu Religion. Nanak was also a strong believer in monotheism. According the reading “Naka tried to harmonize Hindu and Muslim ideas.”
There were nine other Gurus that followed Naka once he had past away. It worked like a king in a since once the Guru died his son would pick up where his father had left off. Following Nanak was Angad, then Amar Das, following him was Ram Das, then Arjan, following him was Har Gobind, and then Har Rai followed by Har Krishan, then Tegh Bahadur, and finally was Gobind Singh.
Sikhs believe that since the same god created everyone that everyone should be created equally as well as fairly. This even included women. According to the reading “Sikhs openly challenged the social hierarchies of the Hindu world.”
The sixth Guru Har Gobind was the first leader to organize the Sikh army in order to defend themselves from the Muslims who were trying for force Islam on them as well as other brutal things.
Many Sikhs follow strict males are not allowed to cut their hair or shave their face, they must also wear a turban. They are to wear a metal bracelet that represents strength. They are to carry a comb in their turban. They were to carry swards and be ready to protect their people. And the last thing is males are to wear short cotton briefs.
Sikhism was able to spread when the British started to build colonies in India. Many Sikhs decided to leave India and go to Canada and the United States as well as Great Britain.
I really liked the video you were able to see Mt Sac in the background, which I thought was cool because it lets us know that there are Skis in our community and these people live amongst us. The video also had a lot of useful information.
